Mississippi Insurance

The state of Mississippi is one of the southern states of the United States, and is also known as the Magnolia State. It is bordered by the Gulf of Mexico to the south and the Mississippi River forms a major part of its western boundary, with the Pearl River being a part of the southern boundary of Mississippi. The state entered the Union, as the 20th state, in 1817.

Until the mid 20th century, Mississippi’s economy was based mainly on agriculture but manufacturing became the most important economic sector towards the end of the century. Service industries, like Mississippi auto insurance, and Mississippi health insurance, have now become increasingly important in the economy. Mississippi has deposits of oil and natural gas and is ranked third in producing cotton in the 50 states. The most valuable agricultural product is soy beans. Commercial fishing, for menhaden and shrimp, are of high value and the state is in the top ten US states in forestry production. Manufacturing products are mainly transport equipment like ships, clothing and textiles, timber, and wood products, like furniture, electronic goods, and processed foods.

Mississippi encompasses an area of 48,286 square miles with a 44 mile coastline. The geography of Mississippi is mainly the East Gulf Coastal Plain, with a smaller section of the Mississippi Alluvial Plain. The East Gulf Coastal Plain has low hills and coastline is separated from the Gulf of Mexico by the shallow waters of the Mississippi Sound. Important rivers are the Mississippi, tributaries like the Yazoo and Big Black rivers, and streams like the Pearl, the Pascagoula, and the Tombigbee. There are numerous lakes in Mississippi, the largest created by dams, like the Ross Barnett Reservoir, Arkabutla Lake, Grenada Lake, and Pickwick Lake.

The climate of Mississippi is warm and humid with long summers and short, mild winters. The state sees frequent tornado activity making Mississippi home insurance and Mississippi life insurance of great importance.  The southern portion of the state is located on the Gulf of Mexico and also experiences drastic weather conditions that form in the Gulf, particularly hurricanes and tropical storms.  This requires the state to reinforce the need for Mississippi home insurance, Mississippi auto insurance, and other forms of Mississippi insurance to protect families and assets.
