Nebraska Insurance

Nebraska is located centrally in the US bordered by South Dakota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado and Wyoming. It is a leading farming state nicknamed the 'Cornhusker State'. Located on the Great Plains of the United States, the land was long considered a part of the Great American Desert and unfit for farming. The area was purchased by the United States as part of the 'Louisiana Purchase' in 1803. Erstwhile US President Jefferson referred to it as being among immense trackless deserts of the purchased area, with not a stick of timber anywhere.

Today, the region supports agriculture through tapping underground water resources and practice of scientific farming methods. It is a land of ranches and farms and is a leading producer of pork, beef, maize and soybean. Leading economic sectors include manufacturing, rail and road transport, IT, telecommunications and insurance.

The Insurance industry plays an important role in Nebraska's economy. According to figures related to 2001, there were 1.1 million ordinary Nebraska Life Insurance policies in force. The total value of the policies was $73.2 billion. The death benefits paid out that year were $319.4 million.

Insurance in Nebraska is controlled and regulated by the Department of Insurance, which is a statutory body created by Article 12, section 1 of the Constitution of the State of Nebraska. By the powers granted under the State Statute vide sections 44-101.01 R.R.S. 1943, the Department regulates Nebraska Home Insurance, Nebraska Auto Insurance, Nebraska Life Insurance, Nebraska Health Insurance, agent licensing and examination and many other related areas.

Income tax in Nebraska is payable in four slabs ranging between 2.56 % to 6.84%. State sales tax is at 5.5%. In addition, some counties impose a city sales and use tax. Personal property other than depreciable personal property is totally exempt from tax. However, all real property is taxable unless statute provides otherwise.

Nebraska has a predominantly Christian population. Approximately 90% of the estimated (2006) population of 1,768,331 consists of Roman Catholics and Protestants. Demographically the population has 38.6% Germans, 12.4% Irish, 9.6% English, 4.9% Czech and 4.9% Swedish as the largest ancestry groups.

Considering climatic conditions, two thirds of Nebraska has a hot summer continental climate; the rest one third has a semiarid steppe climate. Wide seasonal variations in precipitation and temperature can be experienced over the entire state.

Nebraska State symbols have the Western Meadowlark as the State Bird, the White-tailed deer as the State Animal, the Channel Catfish as the State fish, the Goldenrod as the State Flower, and the Cottonwood as the State Tree.
