Among all the US states, Nevada is the driest. It receives grossly uneven rainfall measuring 40 inches for the wettest areas and less than 4 inches in the driest spots every year. The northern part of the state, which is a mild desert, experiences extreme temperatures, with very hot of summers and sub-zero temperatures in the winter. It is fairly common to find wide variations in local temperature and rainfall.
