The state of Oklahoma is situated in the south-central region of the country. Also, otherwise known as the ‘Sooner State’, it is part of an area also generally known as the American ‘heartland’. Oklahoma City is not only the capital of the state but also the largest city in the state. Oklahoma was admitted to the Union as the 46th state in 1907. The name is derived from the Choctaw word ‘Okla' meaning ‘people’ and ‘homma’ which means ‘red’, implying ‘red people’ in the literal sense. It has a rich history of being a frontier state, a refuge for freed slaves and the center during the oil boom of the 20th century. The state is known for being populated with the largest percentage of American Indians. The economy earns a major portion of the income from agriculture and numerous oil and natural gas wells in the state. There are also several health industries in the state and the areas around Tulsa are growing rapidly encouraging a growth in the Oklahoma insurance industry in the state as well.
The geographical location of the state makes it the one of the six states on the frontier state. In the east, it is bounded by Arkansas and Missouri, Kansas in the north, Colorado in the northwest, New Mexico in the west and Texas in the south. It has three major mountain ranges-Ouachita, Arbuckle and the Kiamichis. In addition to this, Oklahoma has the Cavanal hill, the highest hill in the world. Besides three other US states, it has more than ten different ecological areas. For tourism purposes, the state has been divided into six regions-Red Carpet Country, Great Plains Country, Frontier Country, Green Country, Kiamichi Country and lastly, Lake and Trail Country.
The state experiences varying types of climate due to the colliding of the cold and warm air currents. Ranging from a humid subtropical weather to semi-arid climatic conditions. Oklahoma goes through a series of thunderstorms on an average of 40-60 days. They have the reputation of being the most disastrous and devastating of thunderstorms in the world. A major portion of the state comes under the Tornado Alley, making it the most susceptible region in the world to not only the number of tornadoes but also the intensity of the tornadoes.
