Delaware was named after the Delaware Bay and river. Also known as the “first state,” it is one of the first thirteen colonies. This implies that it was amongst the first to sanction the United States Constitution. Other popular nicknames for the state are - The Diamond state, the Blue Hen state or the Small Wonder. Following Rhode Island, Delaware is the second smallest US state. Before the civil war, it had the highest number of free blacks.

In addition to agriculture outputs like livestock, poultry, soybeans, it is also known for industrial products like chemicals, food processing, paper, rubber, and plastic products. Other employment opportunities exist in the government sector, banking, automobile manufacturing, farming and pharmaceutical companies. The Dover Air Force is rated amongst the largest air force bases in the country.  The state is also known for having the best incorporation laws in the US and many industries are headquartered in the state including financial institutions and Delaware insurance companies.

To the north lies Pennsylvania, in the east are the Delaware River and Bay as well as New Jersey and the Atlantic Ocean, in the south and west it is bounded by Maryland. The state has leveled plains with the highest elevation rising not more than 450 feet above the sea level. The northern regions are dominated by the Appalachian Piedmont and other rolling hills. In the south, the Atlantic coast is flat and sandy and in some places even swampy. Since a majority of the state is located in the Atlantic coastal plains it is heavily influenced by the currents of the Atlantic Ocean. It enjoys not only a humid subtropical climate but also a continental type of climate. Owing to the transitional climatic factors, the state has a vast variety of vegetation. All regions of the state, generally experience hot and humid summers.   The state is in a position that makes it prone to natural disasters and storms from the Atlantic Ocean, requiring residents to maintain Delaware home insurance as well as Delaware auto insurance to protect these investments.
