Louisiana Insurance
Louisiana, also known as the Pelican State, is among the southern states of the United States of America, bordered on the south by the Gulf of Mexico. The Mississippi River is part of the eastern border, and the Sabine of the western border. Entering the Union in 1812, as the 18th state, 1861 Louisiana became one of the founding members of the Confederate States. The economy of Louisiana was, for a long time mainly supported by agriculture, but around the 1990s, its vast oil and natural gas deposits took Louisiana to the second place among the mineral-producing states in the nation. Tourism is also an important sector of the economy now, and manufacturing has grown in importance.
Louisiana has an area of 49,650 square miles with a 397 mile long coastline alongside the Gulf of Mexico. The geography of Louisiana consists mainly of plains divided into three regions. The West Gulf Coastal Plain, the Mississippi Alluvial Plain, and the East Gulf Coastal Plains slope gently and the coast has ridges of sand known as barrier beaches. Inland of the beaches are marshes which have large underground masses of salt known as salt domes. Louisiana has a river based environment because of the Mississippi River and its many tributaries. Lake Pontchartrain is the largest inland water body.
